Over 28 Years of Quarrying on Tasmania's East Coast - Still Family-Owned

St Helens Quarries was founded in 1998 by Andy and Joanne Griffiths, but the story starts well before that. Andy grew up in the industry - working as a teenager in his father's concrete, quarrying, and earthmoving business before establishing his own earthmoving company in 1988, starting with a single excavator. Through that business he carried out road construction and maintenance work with Forestry Tasmania and took on projects across local farms throughout the East Coast and North East.

Over time, the earthmoving work led naturally into quarrying, and in 2010 Andy and Joanne established St Helens Quarries on Tasmania's East Coast - bringing together decades of hands-on experience in the ground, the materials, and the region.

More than 28 years on, it's still a family operation. Daughter Elyce and her partner PJ have joined the team, continuing what Andy and Joanne built. What started with a single excavator has grown into a small fleet of machinery and three quarry sites producing a comprehensive range of materials for the East Coast and North East Tasmania.

That history isn't just background - it's what informs how we work. When you call St Helens Quarries, you're talking to a family that has been working in this specific region for over 35 years, who know the ground conditions, understand what local projects require, and genuinely want your job to go well.

WHAT THAT MEANS FOR YOU

When you call St Helens Quarries, you're dealing with people who have been supplying materials across this specific region for over 28 years. That experience translates into practical help you won't get from a larger, more distant supplier:

We know the conditions. East Coast Tasmania has its own soil types, rainfall patterns, and environmental constraints. We know which products perform in coastal conditions, which road base specification suits your ground, and which aggregate sizes work in the high-rainfall areas on the ranges.

We tell you straight. If you're about to order the wrong product for your application, we'll say so - and tell you what to order instead. Our interest is in your project going well, because that's how a family business keeps its reputation over 28 years.

We want to help you stay on budget. We understand that most residential customers aren't ordering materials every week. We take the time to calculate quantities accurately, recommend the most cost-effective product that does the job, and help you avoid over-ordering or under-ordering.

OUR QUARRIES

We operate three quarry sites across the East Coast and North East:
  • Two rock quarries in the St Helens area producing decorative pebbles, crushed granite, road base, sealing aggregates, drainage stone, and construction materials
  • A Sand lease producing Screened Quarts river sand

  • The Diana's basin quarry holds certified phytophthora cinnamomi (PC) free status - required for material supply into national parks, reserves, and environmentally sensitive areas across Tasmania.

ALSO NEED EARTHMOVING?

North East Excavations - our sister business - provides excavator, grader, vibrating roller hire and earthmoving services across the same region. Trenching, site cuts, driveway dig-outs, culverts, drainage, and rural earthmoving. Same family, same phone number.
